Age Is Just A Number – Youth Team’s visit to Elderly Home

The whole gang

Last Friday me and 8 other pupils from Y4M and Y4S (The Feast’s youth teams from Moseley and Golden Hillock Schools) took part in a life changing visit to The Day Centre for the elderly at Balsall Church Centre.

Once at the centre we got straight into it by chatting with them and starting to get to know them. We asked them about what it was like for them when they were our age. One woman said it was very different because children didn’t act the way they do now! We then started helping the elderly play a game of bingo. We helped them by looking out for their numbers when they were called out because some of them didn’t have good eyesight. We also helped some of them to put the counters out as well when their numbers were called.

When bingo was finished some of us put on some performances which included singing, poetry and an inspirational talk about never losing hope. The elderly and staff responded with cheers and applause and requested us to come back. It was clear they felt very happy and proud about what we did. It’s not very often that they get young people coming to spend time with them and entertain them.

This visit was life changing because I have come out of it with a better view of the elderly. I used to think they were nasty and strict but now I know they can have as much fun as us young people because some of them were being really cheeky and having lots of fun laughing with us. It really inspired me because now I think I might volunteer to help the elderly more often and I don’t have any more worries about going to an old folks home.

I think we really made a difference to them by being there and they really made a difference to us – well to me anyway. And the best thing about it? We got to miss two lessons from school!

Brilliant, so pleased you enjoyed it Chris. Old people are good fun, aren’t they? Seeing you guys I’m sure was the high-light of their day, hope you are able to go back at some point. What a shame you had to miss two lesson though, must have been very hard for you!

i think it’s really good how you have all come together to help the elderly as many people stereotype young people as thugs and this shows how nice youngsters can be and are.
