For the past two weeks Steve Hirst and Immy Kaur have been undertaking their Induction fortnight as the new Faiths Act Fellows in Birmingham, jointly hosted by The Springfield Project and The Feast. A program of the Tony Blair Faith Foundation, they have a big year ahead of them working amongst different faith communities to mobilise action against malaria and perinatal care.
With a particular emphasis on the impact malaria has on people in Sierra Leone, including being one of the main causes of child mortality, they will also be exploring the reasons for poor child welfare statistics in the community around The Springfield Project which are amongst the worst in Western Europe.
Through The Feast they will be working in secondary schools and with young people of different faiths to educate, inspire and empower them to do something to help those in need, both locally and abroad.
Angie King, Manager of The Springfield Project shared that ”It has been an absolute delight to have Steve and Immy. They are such enthusiastic and focused and genuine young people, and we really look forward to having them around the project this coming year.”
Immy said of her first two weeks as a Faiths Act Fellow, “The best part has been learning that we are going to be joining a wonderfully positive and very enthusiastic bunch of people, who do great work in the community and further afield.”
Steve too said he was excited about the year ahead, “because I think it is going to be a really good learning experience where I can be involved in the local community, understand local needs, and put on activities with The Springfield Project and The Feast that will help local people and those around the world.”
The Feast’s team too are looking forward to the impact Steve and Immy will have, with Project Manager Tim Fawssett expressing “It is tremendous that we have these guys giving up a year to impact our local young people and families, as well as raise funds and awareness for the desperate needs in Sierra Leone.”
So now they head down to London for a month of training, and we look forward to their arrival proper for the start of the new school term in September. Keep an ear out for much more from them over the months ahead.
