So Nahim (back right in the picture above), welcome to The Feast! It is great to have you on board and we are looking forward to expanding our work across Birmingham with your help. But first we need to introduce you to The Feast’s friends so here are a few questions we have for you.
Can you tell us where you grew up and now live?
I grew up on the border of four areas – Sparkbrook, Sparkhill, Moseley and Balsall Heath (in inner City Birmingham), where all the areas meet around Ladypool Road and Balsall heath Park. I went to a local primary school, Park hill school in Moseley and then Queensbridge Secondary School also in Moseley, then Birmingham University. Birmingham is a unique city where I love to live, work and to make it a better place for everyone.
You have a lot of youth work experience, can you give us a little summary?
I have worked in a variety of setting, from centre based work, detached work, one to one, mobile (working from a mobile bus) running an homeless project, a Youth Inclusion project, and youth work in faith based setting. I have worked in Birmingham and the surrounding area as well as internationally. I also deliver the introduction to youth work course, my passion has always been communities and young people.
And you have even done things overseas which is cool. What countries have you visited and some of the things you did?
The list of countries I have visited is too long, it covers 5 of the 7 continents of the world, with my most enjoyable and rewarding being: Eastern Europe, working in Bosnia, Serbia and Croatia with Youth and Community leaders, bridging gaps between the different ethnic and religious group after war in the region.
Also the Middle East in Jerusalem and the West Bank working with an organisation called ‘Youth Action for Peace’ to bring people together to work on projects which promote peace and understanding around the region and the world. In Pakistan I worked on the Earthquake relief helping communities thru one of the toughest disaster. I have also been key member in the organisation and delivery of an aid convoy to Gaza, talking aid and emergency vehicles to the besieged area.
How do you see The Feast’s approach to youth work as different to what you have done in the past?
The Feast has a unique approach to youth work, tackling issues that affect people locally in order for the young people to have a better understanding of each other and to live in peace and work together. I have worked in a variety of setting bringing young people together. I see The Feast as a family, working together helping each other as well as the community that we work and live in.
As the newest to our team how have you found your first week?
Very interesting, informative and enjoyable, meeting people with so many different skills that I can learn a lot from. A good team which I hope to have many memorable and rewarding times with!
Thanks mate for sharing with us and we all look forward to growing the numbers of Muslim and Christian young people we can help this year, benefiting from your wealth of experience.
